ABC’s 7.30 Report: Filler Complications and the Role of Imaging – 8th May 2023

“I was absolutely unrecognisable”

Dr. Mobin Master, Specialist Radiologist, shares insights from his experience consulting with patients seeking assessment of previous cosmetic procedures. He notes that the current data may underrepresent the number of people experiencing long-term concerns with dermal fillers.

In a recent segment on ABC’s 7.30 Report, Dr. Mobin Master discussed the challenges of assessing risks associated with cosmetic filler injections.

“I think it’s under-reported, if anything,” Dr. Master said. “We can’t give data to patients. It’s very difficult to give them hard figures as to the percentage risk of vascular occlusion or blindness in this country.”

The episode featured a patient, Lisa Grove, who travelled from the US to consult with Dr. Master after experiencing serious complications following cosmetic injections.

Daily Mail: MRI Reveals Unexpected Filler Longevity – January 11th 2023

“I’ve got 20 years of filler stuck in my face.”

In this investigative feature, author and beauty journalist Alice Hart-Davis underwent an MRI scan conducted by Dr. Mobin Master to examine the persistence of hyaluronic acid filler in her face.

Despite being told the product would dissolve within two years, the scan revealed filler still present two decades later. The article explores the role of diagnostic imaging in understanding long-term filler retention and highlights Dr. Master’s expertise in the emerging field of aesthetic radiology.

PRS Journal Study: MRI Insights into Hyaluronic Acid Filler Longevity

Hyaluronic Acid Filler Longevity and Localisation – MRI Evidence

Dr. Mobin Master’s 2021 article on the persistence and localisation of hyaluronic acid filler, based on MRI imaging, has become one of the most cited and widely shared publications in the field.

Featured in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) and supported by a visual infographic created by Impact Science and PRS USA, the study provides critical insights into how long fillers may remain in the face — well beyond typical clinical expectations.

PRS Global Open: Long-term MRI Follow-up of Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler

This peer-reviewed case study by Dr. Mobin Master and Dr. Stefania Roberts presents MRI evidence on the persistence of hyaluronic acid (HA) filler over a 27-month period.

The findings show that:

  • HA longevity varies by facial region

  • The filler remained in the lateral and mid-face areas for over two years

  • Near-complete degradation occurred in the chin by 19 months

  • No migration was observed throughout the study

This research highlights the role of imaging in assessing long-term filler behavior and supports the growing field of aesthetic radiology.

Published Case Report: MRI and Ultrasound-Guided Management of Intraocular Filler Complications

This peer-reviewed case report presents a novel, image-guided approach to managing inadvertent intraocular hyaluronic acid filler injections.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was utilized to confirm the presence of hyaluronic acid filler within the globe. Treatment was performed using a combination of MRI “road mapping” and ultrasound-guided administration of hyaluronidase, conducted by a dual-trained aesthetic physician and radiologist.

This article underscores the importance of advanced imaging techniques in identifying and managing rare complications associated with dermal filler injections, highlighting the role of aesthetic radiology in enhancing patient safety.
